Watchmen is said to be one of the best graphic novels of the last two decades and it comes as no surprise that it was published by DC Comics, home of the most notorious superheroes. But the Watchmen aren’t really superheroes. They like to call themselves “masked vigilantes”. I’ve heard of this graphic novel, but never got the chance to read it. While the movie based on the novel is due to appear in 2009, I might still have some time to find and read it before actually watching the movie. Here’s the first trailer (in HD) which has some attention-grabbing special fx to keep us drooling and wanting for more:
The famous Alan Moore is responsible for the story of the novel. But what’s the story behind the movie adaptation? According to Wikipedia, Warner Bros. confirmed in June 2006 that Zack Snyder would direct a film adaptation of Watchmen, which is set for release on March 6, 2009. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. No big names here. However, the project is also benefitting from directors Paul Greengrass, Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky, and screenwriter David Hayter who were attached over the past years.
Moore claims that David Hayter's screenplay is "as close as I could imagine anyone getting to Watchmen," though the creator does not intend to see the film if it were made. Furthermore, Moore refuses to have his name attached to any films. On the other hand, Dave Gibbons, the artist who envisioned the actual appearance of the Watchmen, has stated he feels Snyder can make a good film and is supporting him.
