I’m pretty familiar with comics characters, but the Spirit somehow managed to sneak past me, without noticing. The Spirit is a fictional American masked crime-fighter, created by writer-artist Will Eisner in 1940, who starred in a Sunday-newspaper comic-book insert. He’s almost as old as Superman and I haven’t heard of this masked vigilante up until recently. A few days ago I found this interesting movie trailer that reminds me of Sin City and film noir atmospheres. Here’s the trailer:
How exactly did The Spirit manage to get a movie of its own? I think it’s all about the mesmerizing femmes fatales who end up falling in love with the masked dude. Either that, or the famous comic book writer/artist Frank Miller detected some potential with this guy, because on July 19, 2006, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Miller would write and direct the feature film bearing the name of our masked womanizer. Frank Miller describes The Spirit: “The character has a terrifying side to him. This is a man who’s died and came back to life. So it twists into fantasy. And of course there are tons of women in it. There have to be — it’s The Spirit. They’re all in love with him, and he’s in love with all of them. You might say he’s a bit of a slut.”
Odd Lot Entertainment is the producing company, with executive producers including Batfilm Productions' Michael Uslan, Benjamin Melniker, and Steven Maier, and producers to include Odd Lot's Linda McDonough and Batfilm's F.J. DeSanto.
In this film, we’ll see Gabriel Macht starring as the Spirit and Samuel L. Jackson as his enemy – the Octopus. The gorgeous babes will be played by Scarlett Johansson (Silken Floss), Eva Mendes (Sand Saref), Jaime King (Lorelei Rox), Sarah Paulson (Ellen Dolan) and Paz Vega (Plaster of Paris). The Spirit is scheduled for release by Lionsgate on December 25, 2008.
